Spotlight On: Brenda Dyer and her book Love's Prophecy

Happy Sunday Everyone!  Today I have a very special author with me, whose book I can't wait to dive into, the lovely Brenda Dyer,  She is going to be sharing the secrets behind her character creation and the details of her latest book.  Take it away Brenda:

Are you there, Brenda? It's us, Mel and Breeana.

Hello everybody. Welcome to Close Encounters With The Night Kind.
My name is Brenda and I'd like to take this opportunity to give Nikki a huge thank you for allowing me to be on her blog. You're the bomb, Nikki.
Today I'm going to share how I came up with my characters and what inspired me to create them.
The plot is what helped me create my characters. As the story unfolded in my mind, my characters developed until they turned from 1 dimensional characters with shadowy faces, to 2D characters with detailed faces and roughed out personalities, to 3D characters, complete with a history, voices I could hear, and well fleshed out personalities.
So, what inspired me to write the plot? How did I come up with the story these characters starred in?
Inspiration #1: J.R.R Tolkien and his Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
Inspiration #2: The TV show Supernatural.
Inspiration #3: JR Ward and her awesome Black Dagger Brother series, plus many other paranormal books.
But the main thing that inspired the plot to Love' s Prophecy and the characters had to be my need to come up with a plausible reason for why vampires are here on Earth and where they came from? I wanted to know who created vampires?
I've read many authors' theories--and they were excellent--but I needed to develop a history that not only ran parallel with ours, but intertwined as well. And I yearned for a good reason as for why vampires HAVE to drink human blood!
Once I had the plot in place, then the characters made their appearance. Mel was fairly easy, which was strange since he's the most tortured.  Breeana was a little more difficult because I kept trying to give her a tragic backstory, but finally I stopped resisting and just listened to her, and then the writing went well. Kal--secondary character--was the easiest, LOL. Out of all my characters, he is the most like me.
So there you have it.  For me plot comes before characters. It is the situations that help shape my characters.
I would like to give away a free e-copy of Love's Prophecy to one commenter. If you are interested, please leave your email address.
Thank you so much, Nikki for having me on your site today. I had a blast.
Thank you to all who stopped by.
Your Very Welcome!!  Now let's take a look at the book:
Dark warriors of might...
Mel is a vampire warrior sworn to hunt and kill demons in the dark streets of Vancouver. But he's burdened with a new assignment: find the meaning behind the Vampire Prophecy. Having no faith in the gods and their empty words, he believes there's no truth to the ancient legend until he meets Breeana, a human woman who bears the mark of the prophecy and resembles the mysterious woman haunting his dreams. When a vengeful demon spies Breeana in his arms, she is marked for death. He must take her from the world she knows until he can eliminate the threat. But the real danger is the role Breeana must play in fulfilling the prophecy and the intense feelings she brings out in him. Mel is forced to choose between his obligations to his kind, the world, and the woman he loves. Does he have the courage to let the one woman who could heal his wounded heart and soul go, or will he risk her life and bind her to him for all eternity?
Small warriors of light...
Veterinarian, Dr. Breeana Spencer yearns for love and companionship, but the disappointment of failed relationships has left her bitter. She now finds solace in romance novels. But when she meets a mysterious stranger, she's drawn to him by a connection so forceful it shatters all reason, leaving her incapable of resisting him. Yet there's more to him than smoldering good looks and a rock-hard body. As she's drawn deeper into his danger-filled world, she learns she's part of an ancient vampire legend. Breeana fears her future is no longer hers and will not include Mel. As their enemies close in, desperate to destroy them both, she must fight to convince Mel her place is at his side. A  life-altering choice is before her—one that will take all her courage and love to make.
Sounds yummy right?  Look for my review soon!!  It was a pleasure to have you here today Brenda!!  I look forward to having you back on!!

  1. Hi, Brenda and Nikki! Loved your post! I'm just like you, Brenda (except you're funnier)in that plot always comes before the characters. I get the situation down and then the characters whisper in my ear what they will or won't do. LOL

I love that Kal is most like you! He's my favorite. :)

  3. Hi Brenda, lovely interview. Isn't it intesting how characters insist on being who they are rather than who we want them to be?

    Don't enter me either.

  10. Jenna, thank you for stopping by. You and I are a lot alike--and you are plenty funny.
I find the situation is what shapes the characters--it's what they have to go through and what they've been through that makes them who they are.
    LOL, like us.

Oh yes, our characters are who they are. We can try and change them, but it usually comes out as forced. I learned that with Breeana.

  28. Hi Brenda, my daughter tells me that she has trouble with her characters all the time. I guess it's what happens when authors care about writing a good book (which is what this one sounds like it is).
