Excerpt 1 And there it was, the recognition. Her wide eyes locked on to his fangs. “It is true,” she whispered. Her pulse accelerated so much this time he thought she might faint. She clutched at her neck and took an unsteady step backwards.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” Nicholas said in as reassuring a voice as he could manage, given his level of annoyance.
Her wide eyes met his again for a brief moment before she turned away.
Great. She has no clue what the Saints actually do, but she’d been told all about the bloodthirsty vampires. Revealing his fangs might not have been the smartest idea on his part. Too late to do anything about that now. “I’m sure Jeremy filled your head with all kinds of crap about my kind. If I wanted you dead, you would be. Quit acting like I’m some kind of monster.”
“I… just… sorry.” Her eyes flashed to his face again. “May I?”
What an odd request. No one had ever asked to touch his teeth before.
“I wouldn’t get too close. I bite.” He teased with a quick snap of his teeth.
“Is that what happened to the guy in the bar?”
“Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to.”
She lifted her hand and gently touched the corner of his mouth. This small act seemed so intimate, so wrong. Nicholas was not sure he appreciated the confused emotions it stirred within him and jerked his head just out of her reach.
“Do they retract?”
What a stupid question. “Why would they?”
“In the stories…”
“I’m not some fictional character, sweetheart. My teeth don’t magically move around in my jaw. And I don’t sparkle either.”
“Do you… drink blood?”
“You already know these answers. Why do you pretend not to?”
“I don’t know everything.” That, he knew, was the truth. She had a lot to learn about the supernatural world. But he wasn’t the one to teach her. He had neither the time nor the desire

Giveaway and Guest Post with Ninette Swann and her book Direct Contact

As dystopian novels begin to take a larger piece of the fiction puzzle, lots of readers (and writers!) find themselves confused at the new genre. Dystopia and science fiction--they’re two peas in a pod, they go hand in hand, but there is a distinct difference between them. Think of a rectangle and a square. A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not necessarily a square. The same is true for science fiction and dystopian fiction.

While all dystopian fiction is considered science fiction, most science fiction is not dystopian in nature. Dystopian fiction is the square.

The best definition of dystopian fiction I’ve found is by the writer over at Stacked. (http://www.stackedbooks.org)

“The hallmark of a dystopia is the presence of a repressive or controlling society, usually presented initially as utopian. I also posit that this must necessarily be done on a large scale. Failing that, it must seem to be large-scale. (Teenage readers, just because your parents repress your ability to party on Friday nights does not mean your home is a dystopia.)”

This makes Direct Contact a dystopia. The people of Terrecina live charmed lives, so long as they don’t step out of line. They do what the Emperor decrees, and they don’t ask questions. In return, they get to stay in their little bubble above Earth. Sure, they know that below the plagues are raging and poverty and despair rule, but they don’t care. Out of sight, out of mind. Terrecina, it would appear, is a utopia.

Until Malcolm and Julie start ripping away at the image. As they uncover power-hungry plots, and find out that it’s not only the Level People (the people of Earth) who need to worry about the Emperor’s greed and lack of ethics, they see that the dystopian environment spans much farther than the Earth below, that they in Terrecina are actually living it as well.

As far as the romance is concerned, any time you have a male and female lead who fall in love or at least in lust, you’ve got your romantic element. Not all romances must have sex, although Direct Contact does. There is a difference between romance and erotica. While both genres can be excellent, a romance trends toward emotional development and strife, whereas erotica uses more physical description and hectic action to bring about a quick romantic/erotic fire for the reader’s pleasure.

Put them together.

The dystopian romance combines protagonists breaking free of the disastrous, oppressive world in which they live, striving for a better existence, not only for themselves but for all. In the process, they perhaps fall in love, or struggle with human emotions in a triangle or competition-esque subplot. They work tirelessly against the conditions presented to them and their hearts work tirelessly to bungle things up, muddy the waters, and maybe eventually save them as they are saving others.

That’s at least what Direct Contact strives to do.

Review: Demon Mine by Nikki Prince

Samael is a fallen angel doomed to repeat his life and love for Lilianna Jackson over and over again. That is until she finally remembers who she is and the reason for the curse that has befallen them both. For you see, Lilianna was once Lilith the first wife of Adam and the lover of Samael. Are they doomed to keep repeating the past? Or will there be a new future for the reincarnated lovers?

My Review:
This was an excellent version of the creation story! Hot and sexy, Nikki Prince takes you on a journey to help Lilianna or Lilith to breaking the curse that has been placed on her true love. It seems Lilith had a great reason for stepping out of the garden because Samael gave up more than his wings just to be with her. But is their loved going to be continually doomed because of the curse? Or can Samael finally get Lilith to remember who she really is?
This was a great read! Full of suspense and incredibly hot sex scenes that you will need more than just a cup of cold water to cool you off. I loved the imagination behind the plot of this short. It's an amazing twist!

Excerpt 1

Sandra leaned against the door frame, reached into her low-rider jeans’ back pocket and produced an envelope. She passed the folded paper to her. Frankie stared at the picture, reading the words: Child Find, Missing; young female seventeen, eyes hazel, brown hair, height 5’7”, weight 120.

“How could you keep this from me?” she asked, tightening her grip on the envelope.

“I didn’t. Yesterday, my mom received her Visa bill. She gave me the envelope when she saw Candice’s picture. I phoned her parents. They are in the middle of a divorce. Her mom said when they first split, she began to stay out late. Then one day she just never came home.”

“We have to find her. The police haven’t been able to,” Frankie said, waving the envelope.

“We will do what we must do to track her. Did you bring your cards?”

“Yes.”

“Come with me,” she said, grabbing her hand. She dragged her into the dish room stopping to retrieve her Tarot deck from the pocket of her jean jacket.

This book was actually a bit shocking. I wouldn't have expected the turn of events to take place the way that they did, but I'm actually glad. This book had a heavy dose of reality in it that will hit some people pretty hard. It definitely will make you stop and think. So many people get lost in their own lives and they forget about everyone but themselves. This book was very well written and I would love to read something by this author again. This was a very entertaining read!
