Interview and Giveaway with Dana Michelle Burnett and her book Spiritus

Good Morning CEWTNK viewers!!  Today I was lucky enough to snag an interview with Dana.  She is here to talk about her latest series Spiritus. I have had the privilege of reading it and loved it immensely!!  Stay tuned after the interview for a chance to win your own copy!!  Let the questions begin!!

How old were you when you first realized you wanted to write?  I was still in elementary school when I decided I didn’t want to be an actress anymore.  I thought it would be more fun to create my own stories rather than act out someone else’s.

I agree!!  It’s more fulfilling!! Most authors have an unusual story or way that they come up with their ideas for books…Do you have one?  For the Spiritus series, I kept driving past the old mansions in Corydon and wondering about the people that lived there over the years.  Throw in some old legends (every small town has a few) and Spiritus started coming to life.

Amazing, but I can see an old house opening up ideas!  What was your biggest influence that steered you towards writing?
I read Gone with the Wind and fell in love with it.  I learned everything that I could about the Civil War era (came in handy for Spiritus) and then I learned everything I could about Margaret Mitchell.  I was amazed by the way that she wrote the book because she had read everything in the library and that she never wrote before that.  I thought I’d give it a try and fell in love with it.

The epic Gone with the Wind, a beautiful classic!  I have to ask, what are the hardest scenes for you to write?  Any scene with Alastor in it challenges me!  It’s hard to write for a ghost that can’t touch anything.  Think about it, how does he show his love?  How does he comfort his romantic interest?
That does prove to be an unusual challenge..lol.  Are sex scenes difficult for you to word?  Not really.  Spiritus doesn’t really have any traditional sex scenes, but my first romance novel Two Out of Three was loaded with them.  Even though the novel didn’t do well, everyone that read the book, even if they hated the story, LOVED the sex scenes.

They must have been quite well written!! Do you see yourself writing in another genre?  I wrote literary short stories for years and even put them in a novel, but paranormal romance is my favorite genre.

It is one of mine too!!  Has your family been supportive?
My mother is my first and most critical reader, she can be downright cruel at times, but she’s always right.  My daughter is my biggest fan and we take turns supporting each other.  She checks my Amazon sales ranks all the time and I cheer her on at every one of her dance competitions.

LOL…now that’s a fair trade!!  Are any of your characters reflective of you?
Becca and I have a lot in common, but I do have a new idea brewing for when the Spiritus series is done and that character is very me.

Please please make the end happy!! What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I am a proud dance mom (don’t believe everything you see on television) and I love cheering my daughter on.  I also love old movies and gardening.

I don’t, my daughter is getting ready to start ballet.  But there are those competitive scary moms. Who is your favorite book heroine?
Scarlett O’Hara is still awesome!  I love that she challenged society and took care of herself.  She may have wanted a man, but she sure didn’t need one.

Oh..I agree!  Do you have any unusual habits that revolve around writing?  I stopped smoking almost two years ago, so I’m a compulsive pencil chewer.  I write everything out long hand in whatever order it comes to me.

What is you favorite mystical creature?
I am Team Vampire all the way.  There is something sexy and beautiful about vampires and I hope Edward likes older women.

LOL!!! What were some of your biggest challenges at the beginning of your career?
My biggest challenge was silencing my inner critic.  It’s still a problem to this day.  I have days where I think I’m a story telling genius and then days when I’m a complete literary idiot.

I’d have to squash that one!!!  How do you feel about reader comments?
I love getting comments from readers.  Lately the message has been for me to hurry up and get Haunted out there, but still, it’s nice to hear what readers think about my work.

I’m one of those commenters!!  Do you have any advice for new authors?
To Quote Stephen King:  “Read a lot and write a lot.”

Where are your books available?
My books are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords.  The paperback edition is available from most online retailers.

What can we expect from you in the future?
Haunted will be out in the spring and I’m already in the process of outlining the final book in the Spiritus series.

Where can we reach you and become informed of updates?

Thanks so much Dana!!  I had so much fun reading your book!!  Now its your turn fans!!  Fill out the rafflecopter for your chance to win!!

That's a hard question to answer. But I'd like to believe that love does conquers all, in life and death. The truest forms of love should go beyond a life time :)
I also have never had a ghostly experience so I'm in between with that belief. I'm one of those people that does not believe until I see it. I actually would like to believe it, but until I see it...

I enjoyed the interview. It's great to 'see' someone that has follow through with their dreams from childhood.

I do believe in ghosts. I think love as well as other strong emotions can leave an impression on this world. I love a good ghost story. I read you review and would love to read this book.

Love can conquer all even after death. It just may take more work.
