Giveaway and Guest Post with author Lashell Collins and her book Pierced by Danger

First, I'd like to thank Nikki for inviting me to guest post today; I'm excited to be here! I was asked the question: Does suspense add any unique elements to an already hot romance? Well, my response is a resounding YES!

The dictionary defines suspense as: a quality in a work of fiction that arouses excited expectation or uncertainty about what may happen. That sounds about right, I suppose.

I think suspense is a wonderful tool for writers to employ when constructing a great romance, mainly for two big reasons. For starters, suspense can help drive a plot line forward in really fun and exciting ways. I mean, there's nothing like dangling your heroine from a rope, outside a 50 story building, or even over a cliff on top of a mountain, and watching (or reading) with baited breath as your hero tries desperately to figure out how to save her! Or having your hero throw himself in front of a speeding bullet in order to keep her safe, and then wondering with every frantic turn of the page whether or not his ultimate act of bravery and love will end up being the death of him! That's the kind of stuff that makes your blood pump and your heart pound. The thing that makes you unable to put a book down.

The second, and arguably more important, thing that suspense does for an already hot romance is that it throws your hero and heroine into some really interesting, often compromising and steamy positions together. It has a way of pushing them into a few juicy moments of forced intimacy where all of their defenses are lowered, their hearts are already racing, and their emotions are running high. Breathing is shallowed, senses are heightened, inhibitions are all but non-existent. Perfect time for sparks (and sometimes clothing) to fly! Like, for instance, when Detective Joshua Pierce takes it upon himself to escort lovely and terrified assault victim Samantha Colby home from a dark and deserted parking lot one night.

Suspense is that thing that makes us feel “on edge.” It builds and builds until we just don't think that we can take it anymore, and then it explodes into technicolor, making us want more and more and more. Sort of like a really hot love scene. Yes, nail-biting, page-turning suspense can add a lot of heat to an already super-hot romance!

Bio:

Lashell Collins was born and raised in a small Ohio town. And although her Midwestern upbringing gave her a very practical outlook on life, it didn’t stop her from daydreaming about romance and love and all the special little things that make life magical.

Lashell has always loved to write and often dreamed about pursuing her passion, but like so many of us, she allowed life and circumstances to lead her down a very different path for a long time. An avid lover of both animals and flowers, Lashell has spent the last twenty years working in Veterinary Clinics and Garden Centers before finally finding the courage to take writing seriously.

She lives in Ohio with her husband and their two four-legged children, a Bernese Mountain Dog named Ben and an American Bobtail cat called Spike. She is a hopeless romantic, a huge music fan, loves to laugh and loves a happy ending.

Blurb:When stunningly beautiful drilling heiress, Samantha Colby is mugged one night, her misfortune leads to an encounter with the handsome and mysterious Detective Joshua Pierce. The reluctant celebutante is immediately taken by his rugged good looks, his take-charge attitude and his quiet concern for her safety. Unable to stop the disturbing thoughts suddenly running through his mind at the sight of her, Detective Pierce finds himself strangely captivated by her beauty, her innocence and her charm. Inexplicably drawn to one another and unable to fight it, the pair embark on a passionate physical affair. But despite the safety and love Samantha feels when she's with him, she soon discovers that the good detective is a tormented man, haunted by ghosts and memories that he can't forget. But when it becomes clear that Samantha's mugging was only the beginning of her trouble, can Pierce find a way to quiet the demons that threaten to consume him in order to keep her safe, or will he allow his tortured past to destroy them both? With heavy doses of romance, eroticism and heart, the Pierced Trilogy is a sweet tale of finding love, overcoming your past, and learning to hope for the future.

Well, aside from Lashell being an Ohioan (me too!) I agree that suspense is very important in this genre. My favorite is when the book goes along smoothly with hints of possible problems for the first half or 2/3 of the book, then WHAM! The suspenseful moment happens and the rest of the book is spent resolving the conflict and then the characters get their very-well-deserved happy ending.
