Spotlight On: Jewel of the East by Victoria Vane

JEWEL OF THE EAST
(The Devil DeVere #5)
Victoria Vane
Having once lived his life only for larks, laughter, and ladies of easy virtue, Captain Simon Singleton has returned from the war with the colonies a shambles of a man. Now free from six years of captivity, he's still fettered by irrational fears that confine him to a life of seclusion.
Once the crowning jewel of the most lavish brothel in London, the exotic Salime finds her reputation and livelihood destroyed by a bitter rival. With a closely guarded secret stripped away, Salime fears no man will ever desire her again. Seeking aid from one who once saved her life, Salime accepts a proposition to repay her debt by becoming a companion to his war-scarred friend.
Circumstance brings these two damaged souls together; but fate ignites a love story worthy of the Arabian Nights.
EXCERPT (in which the stage is set)
         Medford Abbey, Kent- 1785
A sharp rap soon sounded on the door. Ludovic, Viscount DeVere glanced up from his periodical to the entrance of a liveried footman. "A message for you, my lord."
The servant offered the wax-sealed missive on a silver salver. "It was delivered by a most…unusual…courier." The footman gave a sniff of disdain.
"Indeed? What do you mean?" Ludovic asked in a bored drawl.
"'Tis a behemoth blackamoor, my lord."
"Mustafa?" Ludovic threw down his periodical and snatched up the missive. "What the devil?"
"He awaits in the kitchen. Insufferable rude creature he be. Just stands all akimbo. Refuses to speak or to depart without an answer from your lordship."
"The man cannot speak. He has no tongue. They took it when they castrated the poor devil."
The footman's eyes bulged. He involuntarily crossed his legs. Ludovic broke the seal and scanned the contents with a deepening frown.
Most honored Efendi,

It is with the greatest humility that I appeal to he who once safeguarded my life. It is with exceeding distress that I must entreat you once more, being much in need of a friend and protector.

Your most devoted and obedient servant,
Salime
Ludovic read the cryptic note once more. Salime in want of a protector? What a sticky situation that created. At first he wondered why she'd appealed to him, but then again, there were few people she trusted. Given their shared history, he would never deny her aid. Moreover, Salime had been instrumental in helping him to achieve his present state of connubial bliss. For that alone he owed her his undying gratitude.
"Tell him I shall be in touch with his mistress shortly…and that she should notify me at once should her circumstances become any more…distressed."
"Aye, my lord." The much-chagrinned footman departed.
Ludovic glowered after the departing servant. Salime had never been in want since coming to London. He wondered what could be behind her request, but then abandoned both letter and the dilemma the moment another surprise came bursting into his library. "Ned?" Ludovic leaped up to greet his best friend. "What the devil has brought you all the way from Yorkshire to Kent?"
"I have most portentous news, DeVere," Ned sputtered with excitement. "News I could hardly relay by messenger. So I came down myself."
"What kind of news? Out with it, Chambers," Ludovic commanded.
"Mayhap you should pour us a drink first."
Ludovic lifted a sardonic brow. "A drink? Not so urgent after all?"
"'Tis fortification you'll need for the shock you're about to receive."
"Shock? Me? You know I am not easily shocked, Ned." Ludovic paused with his hand on the brandy decanter and a slight frown marring his face. "Come to think of it, I'm damned if I can recall a single occasion that has wrought from me such a profound reaction as shock."
Ned flung himself into Ludovic's favorite chair. "There's a first for everything, DeVere. Now that drink?"
Ludovic sloshed amber liquid into two glasses, handing one to the would-be herald, who downed it in one draught. Ludovic quirked a brow.
"It was a devilish long ride," Ned explained.
"All to deliver this shocking report of yours?" Ludovic perched a hip on the corner of his mahogany desk.
"Yes! It's Lazarus all over again!"
"Lazarus? Am I to surmise that someone has been miraculously raised from the dead?"
"Actually, he might as well have been," Ned declared. "I can hardly countenance it after all this time."
"You are trying my patience, Ned."
"It's Simon. He's returned."
"Good God!" The glass slipped from his hand to shatter at Ludovic's feet. "You can't mean Sin is alive after all this time? He was pronounced killed in action six years ago."
"I mean exactly that!" Ned exclaimed. "He is indeed alive and may even be in London as we speak. I have the news straight from Baron Singleton. His ship was expected to arrive several days ago."
"Why am I only hearing of this now? I see the bloody Singleton regularly at Parliament."
"Probably because the good baron doesn't like you, DeVere. He believes you were an abominable influence on his son."
"Then he would be right." Ludovic smirked and then stared at the shattered glass at his feet.
"Looking a bit white there, my friend. This is known as shock."
"Admittedly, I am incredulous. How can this be? Where the devil has he been?"
"Interned as a prisoner of war for the greater part of six years."
"Six years? In all that time there were no exchanges?"
"Very few. The colonials refused to give up ours when they claimed their men were only released on the point of starvation and death. I daresay 'tis no exaggeration. I've seen a number of reports on the deplorably inhumane conditions of our prison hulks. Indeed it's said that the colonial prisoners set fire to the Whitby, choosing to go down in flames, rather than die of starvation and disease." Ned shook his head. "What a hellish business war is."
"But if Sin was a prisoner, he should have been released nigh on a year ago when the treaty was signed."
"Apparently he was too ill to travel. Only made it as far as Bermuda before he was struck with the bloody flux or some such and required months of convalescence…poor sod."
"We must go to him, Ned. At once."
"He'll not be the same man," Ned voiced what they were both thinking.
"No," Ludovic shook his head. "Likely never again."

Review: Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple--she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.

Etienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years--long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher.

My Review:

What a phenomenal introduction into the world of the Immortal Guardians!!  This was a completely new spin on the vampire world because in this series..vampires are (after a certain amount of time) the bad guys.  There is a race of humans with enhanced DNA who are called gifted ones.  They all posses an unusual talent or gift, such as being able to heal injuries with their hands or teleportation.  Vampirism in this world is considered a virus that ends up driving most turned humans mad.  Gifted Ones are among the few humans that the virus actually enhances and doesn't drive insane.  Thus the league of Immortal Guardians was created...but I am really sure the leaders maybe a bit of something else.  They were pretty fascinating and extremely powerful.  Not to mention there is an alien and an angel (type) being in this group of warriors.

One of the things I thought was completely awesome was that the book was based in NC.  I'm an NC native and the books that you read about that take place here are few and far between.  It was neat reading about another world happening in the state I was born and stll reside in.

The array of characters were amazing.  So many of them are walking around with question marks as to their true origin.  This is Krysta and Etienne's story.  Krysta was an unheard of vampire slayer for almost 6 years before Etienne stumbled upon her on one of his hunts.  He was completely fascinated with her and incredibly turned on by the fact she knew her way around weapons and fighting.  What hot alpha make wouldn't be turned on by a female that could give him a run for his money?

The story line was completely enjoyable, the sex was smoking with plenty of build up, and the characters were all wonderful! I for one cannot wait to re-visit this world.  I have added a new author to my must read list!!

Giveaway and Review: Compromising Willa by Diana Quincy

Blurb:
Lady Wilhelmina Stanhope is ruined and everyone knows it. Back in Town for the first season since her downfall, Willa plans to remain firmly on the shelf, assuming only fortune hunters will want her now. Instead she focuses on her unique tea blends, secretly supporting a coffee house which employs poor women and children. If her clandestine involvement in trade is discovered, she'll be ruined. Again.

No one is more shocked by Willa's lack of quality suitors than the newly minted Duke of Hartwell. Having just returned from India, the dark duke is instantly attracted to the mysterious wallflower. His pursuit is hampered by the ruthless Earl of Bellingham, who once jilted Willa and is now determined to reclaim her.

Caught between the clash of two powerful men, a furious Willa refuses to concede her independence to save her reputation. But will she compromise her heart?

Excerpt:
Cam regarded Willa with weary resignation. “Your reputation cannot survive another scandal.”

“We shall marry,” Hart said in decisive tones, certain of the inherent rightness of his decision. “It is the only answer.”

Willa’s arms crossed under her chest, drawing his eye to her abundant, softly quivering bosom. One that would soon be his to cherish—along with the rest of this heavenly woman. The thought of it triggered a surprising burst of gladness in him.

But she didn’t seem to be reacting with the same equanimity. “You two and your misplaced sense of honor are not going to force me into marriage with a man who has made his disdain for me quite clear.”

A glancing pain stung Hart’s chest. “Do you find the idea of marriage to me so abhorrent?”

“I won't consent,” she said stubbornly to Cam. “My reputation be gone. I won't be forced into a silly charade of a marriage for no good reason. I won't do it.”

“I cannot force you.” Sadness weighted Cam’s voice. Willa exhaled with obvious relief, but then Cam turned to Hart. “She leaves me no alternative. I demand satisfaction.”

“What! Are you cracked?” Willa blurted. “Don't be a fool. There is not going to be any duel!”

Tension snaked into every muscle in Hart’s body. “Name your seconds, Camryn.”

Willa whipped around to Hart. “Don’t be so beetle brained,” she cried. “Cam’s a perfect shot. He’ll kill you.”

“So be it.” A sense of calm infused him. “Your honor has to be avenged.”

“Avenged?” Willa's voice rose in panic. “What of your mother? You would leave her alone in this world?

She has already lost one son. You would condemn her to a life without either of her children?”

“It is not ideal, but I have little choice in the matter.” Heaviness settled in his heart. His mother’s grief would be unimaginable. “Name your seconds, Camryn.”

“Not ideal? Aren’t you the last of your line?” she asked in a voice gone shrill with a rising sense of panic.
He nodded in assent without taking his eyes off Cam’s stony expression. “What will it be, old friend, bullet or blade?”

“Wait!” Desperation edged her voice. “You must give me time to consider this. If marrying Hartwell is the only alternative to you two killing each other, I should at least have a few days to consider it.”

“No.” Cam’s impenetrable stare moved from Hart to Willa. “I will have your consent now.”

Oh!  This book was so delightfully cute!! Out of main characters, I really can't decide on who I enjoyed more....Willa or Hart!  Both were delightful characters and I for one enjoyed them both.  The banter was witty and the book really stayed true to the times.  The villain was very well written and I myself wanted to stab him several times while reading this book. I loved the add in about the coffee shop.  It truly was a delightful surprise along with the lady's reading club.  I enjoyed the spectacular plot and the naughty scenes that were peppered throughout.  They were indeed hot!!  This is my first experience with Diana, but it will not be my last!

Review: Dark Wolf by Kate Douglas

Sebastian Xenakis is still coming into his power as a wizard. He can shapeshift by magical means and runs as a wolf using the power he draws from the elements. But young women are dying—raped by a human and then slaughtered by a wolf. Suspicion falls on the shapeshifting Chanku, but Sebastian wonders if he might somehow be guilty of the crimes.

Then he meets Lily Cheval, the uncrowned princess of the powerful Chanku, and realizes he will do whatever it takes to clear his name and win her love. But evil walks where Sebastian goes, and there are mysteries neither Lily nor her father, the powerful wizard, Anton Cheval, cannot unravel. Is Sebastian the perfect mate for Lily, or is he instead, one she should fear?

My Review:

Anyone looking for a yummy read with a hot magician, then this is the one.  Lily Cheval finds her true love while hunting down a killer that has threatened their way of life.  The sad part is that Sebastian happens to be a suspect.  I have enjoyed Kate Douglas's Wolf Tales and was excited about this new series.  This series still includes hot m/m...m/m/f ..f/f and some full on mating while in wolf form.  Kate Douglas does an excellent job in the development of the characters.  I loved Lily.  She was charismatic, loving, sexy, and just an overall fantastic character.  The chemistry between the couple was dynamic and spot on.  The thing I love about visiting Kate's worlds is that she always makes everything flow naturally, as if she lived among wolves.  If you have never experienced a Kate Douglas book, you are missing out.  This series is starting off phenomenally!!!

Giveaway and Guest Post: Stripper with Spice by Afton Locke

Stripper With Spice

Thank you for hosting me today. I’m excited to talk about the spice CLOVES, and my latest release, Stripper With Spice, a contemporary erotic romance.

Clenching Cloves

Cloves are named after the French word for nails because the dried buds resemble them. When I was a kid, I had fun sticking them in hams until the meat looked like a big pincushion. As an adult, one of my favorite comfort foods is French onion soup. Planning to get home late, I wrote instructions for my husband to make it for me. Unfortunately, he interpreted “a couple cloves of garlic” as cloves, literally. The soup tasted unusually sweet and aromatic. Although palatable, I didn’t plan on eating it that way again.

When it comes to men, nails remind me of construction. Who doesn’t love a rugged man who works with his hands? We’re talking tan, muscular, and macho. As a child, the men my dad hired to build houses fascinated me. The most noteworthy was a man whose last name was similar to Horny. Very appropriate because the man would shag anything that moved. He had arresting blue eyes, a bushy head of hair, and a great tan. He was great looking and he knew it. Women flocked to him in droves.

The summer I was 11, I was lucky enough to get a one-one-chat with him. He leaned on the bumper of a pickup truck. Instead of patronizing me because I was young, he made me feel like an adult. My eyes wandered, checking out every inch of this fine man flesh. When my gaze drifted to his loose cutoffs, it lingered there because it soon became apparent he wasn’t wearing any UNDERWEAR! While I didn’t see the full effect of his jewels, I saw quite a side view of something. Out of all the workers who drifted in and out, he’s the one I remember. I wonder why?

In my story, Carlos also has rugged appeal. It’s not just about a handsome, muscular body but how he owns and moves it. A good looking stripper can still wow the crowd if he can’t dance, but the ones who can rock the stage with stellar dance moves steal the show. One night at the strip club, the lights mysteriously go out and Janice finds out just how good his moves are. Like a carpenter, he bangs his hammer like a pro.

I chose you.

He looks and sounds so serious and honest, how can I not be completely convinced? His words echo inside my head as he grips both sides of my face and lowers his mouth to mine in slow motion. The thrill bubbles return to my bloodstream as if the elevator cable has just snapped, dropping us to the basement.

Unlike last night’s, this kiss is slow and full of promise. He samples my mouth as if we have all the time in the world. A flash of mint-flavored tongue pierces my soul, tearing a moan from my throat. With one hand still on the button, I raise my other to his shoulder. Feeling the bare, hot skin there fuels my desire, pushing me dangerously close to the edge of self-control.

“Do you want this as much as I do, Janice?”

God, yes. I need more…all of you.

I reply by sliding my hand across the tiger-striped fabric over his back. The warm satin, with muscles moving under it, is just as sexy as bare skin. His hips dance against mine—rubbing, thrusting and teasing. My fingers move to the worn waistband of his jeans at his side, wanting to pull them off. My body throbs, needing him as I’ve never needed anything before.

When he pulls my finger off the close-door button, the door opens to reveal an annoyed looking family of five waiting to get on. The parents, obviously noticing Carlos’ wild vest and our heavy breathing, exchange a disgusted look.
Carlos takes my hand and leads me off the elevator. My heart races as we walk down the corridor. Luckily, the carpet absorbs the trembling in my legs so it doesn’t make a sound.

He stops at one of the doors. I fixate on the way he slides his keycard from his back pocket and inserts it into the door reader. It’s something I’ve done myself a million times without thinking, but this is different. This is foreplay.

The door responds with a little click and a flashing green light. I guess we just got the green light for wild, hot sex. My heart accelerates even more. If it goes any faster, he’ll have to call a paramedic. I can read the headline now.
Boring financial analyst dies from anticipating sex with a hot cover model.

I check my watch. Fifteen minutes have passed.

“We still have plenty of time.” He ushers me inside and closes the door behind me.

The room is completely dark because the drapes are drawn. It’s as if we’ve entered a private cave, hidden from the world. This is it, I think as Carlos flips on a dim lamp. We’re really going to do this. We’re going to have sex.

“Come in and make yourself comfortable,” he says.

I stay where I am but gaze around the room, noticing with approval how neat he is. His clothes hang in the closet and his toiletries are laid out on one corner of the sink. The smoky-brown bottle probably contains the mysterious mesquite scent. I wish he were a slob so I could tell myself it would never work between us.

It doesn’t take long for my attention to stumble across the centerpiece of the room, the large bed. Is it another stage? Is the perfectly pressed red cover the curtain? Unlike the platforms we shared for the photo shoot and lap dance, this one is completely private.

What if he doesn’t like my performance?

HEARTS BY FIRE
Publication Date:  November 15, 2013
Genre:  New Adult

Patricia Allenz was a somewhat typical girl. For the past few months, she’d been busy counting down the months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds until her first day of college at Port Townsend University, in Washington. Patricia’s life was a simple one as far as she knew. Most of her memories involved her family, which consisted of her younger brother Kellen, and her Abuela Viola. After her grandmother’s death on her sixteenth birthday, Patricia was convinced that day had been the worst day of her life.

Wishful thinking, on her part. On the night before her first day of college classes, her grandmother visits her in a dream. What starts out as a reunion between the two rapidly turns into a complete nightmare.

From that night, forward her path changes from a straight and narrow one to a totally different realm all together. It does not help that along the way the men that she’d loved at one time, or rather centuries ago, are so conflicted that she cannot decide who to trust. Her body craves them both, but her heart only sings to one of their souls.

Patricia is forced to face truths she cannot understand, betrayals from loved ones, and a love so powerful she would die to keep him safe. A new world of archangels, demons, and witches threatens to swallow her whole. She has the choice to run away from the unknown or live up to the title Archangel Princess of Alpheratz forever.

Will Patricia stand up to her fate or will she crumble and fight against what is destined to come?

Excerpt:
Class was over, and all the Facebook robots were packing up their iPads and making their exit. I felt a warm sensation start to rise from the pit of my stomach up to my throat.

I must have been sitting there for a while, when I noticed myself rubbing the stone hanging from my necklace. The cold energy was calming me, keeping the rising fire inside from overpowering me completely. Why do I feel so freaked out?

The answer to my question… because I wasn’t alone. That was when I noticed the last student to leave had stopped at the end of my aisle, watching me… as my mind plummeted back to earth. Clearing his throat, he opened his beautiful mouth.

Yes, I know, who would have ever thought a mouth could be beautiful, but his definitely was.
“Um, I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable earlier. I just thought you looked familiar,” he said casually. As this boy talked to me, I felt as if I were having an out of body experience.

He had caught me off guard, and the way his smoky eyes looked into mine, made me feel as if maybe he did know me.

“Oh, uh, it’s okay. No offense taken,” I replied meekly. “Guess I have one of those familiar faces,” I blurted out before I could stop myself. I turned abruptly and started to pack away my books. As I glanced his way a few times, I noticed that my movements were being matched by his own adjustments. As if he were moving along with me, or something.

I must be going crazy. I need to check the expiration date on that ginger tea!

Breaking the silence, the handsome guy spoke again, “How rude of me, my name is Enthany. Enthany Jovanea.”

He held out his hand. I walked towards the end of the aisle, still stuck on the way he pronounced his name. Starring deep into his eyes in a trance like state, I held out my hand, pulling back a little once my skin made contact with his. His skin was as smooth as marbles with no blemishes or scars. His nails were the perfect combination of polish and buff, radiating their own shine.

Then the heat hit me as if I had just jumped in front of a fucking Mack truck. That same feeling I had in my dream… that force building inside of me was now growing. And it was growing fast. Looking into his eyes was comforting, but the rest of him just didn’t feel right to me.

“Patricia, are you sure you’re okay?” he asked with a furrowed brow. His beautiful grey eyes were full of worry as they searched my own for the answer to his question.

Blinking rapidly to break the awkward trance, I looked down at my black leather knee high boots instead. “Um, yeah, sorry. I’ve been having a strange morning,” I honestly admitted. “First day of college is really playing with my nerves, I guess. I’m Patricia Allenz, by the way.” I blurted again looking down at my hand as I snatched it back. Wow! Had we been holding hands that entire time?

“Yeah, I know,” he said smiling. “You did make a fashionably late entrance.”

Using all my strength, which for me wasn’t much, I tried helplessly to contain this energy rising inside of me. It was fiery and alarming. My internal hazard lights had gone off somewhere inside of me.

My eyes darted to the exit sign. Sensing that this Enthany guy was not about to give way, I motioned towards the exit sign with my trembling hand. “Oh, yes, of course, ladies first.”

Sidelined Afterlife: Guest Post and Giveaway

Behind the Book: The Music That Inspired SIDELINED AFTERLIFE

Thanks very much for having me on Close Encounters with the Night Kind today. What a fun place to visit!

The holidays are such a busy time of year, and it seems like we’re always running somewhere, hurrying to do something, or falling behind. So today, I’d like to share some fun music. Sidelined Afterlife, my latest book, released this week, and the playlist I used while writing different scenes in this book includes some songs and artists I had never heard of before. Each song helped me create a vision of what would happen in a particular scene.

Hope you have fun listening to the tunes!

Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain) by Gary Allan
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q3LEadIk3w
Why I used this song: There’s a thunderstorm during the first scene of Sidelined Afterlife, and I wanted to set the tone that, although things were stormy, they would eventually be okay. Kind of my theory about life, too!

I’m Not Okay (I Promise) by My Chemical Romance
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRFhNZNu_xw
Why I used this song: This song is not my usual taste at all. But really, I didn’t pick it…heroine Veronica did. She’s pretty good at hiding her emotions, so I listened to this song a lot before/during writing a lot of her songs.

Wrap My Mind Around You by Trent Dabbs
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPyYP_z521E
Why I used this song: Hunter, the hero of Sidelined Afterlife, needs Veronica’s help. But he cannot understand her at all. Guess he’s going to need to get to know her better, right? This song helped me get in Hunter’s head…his confusion about figuring out Veronica. And his feelings for her.

Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esEdC0c3YI4
Why I used this song: Ha! Another rain song. Are you sensing a theme here? LOL. Veronica is…well, for lack of a better word, pissed when the story begins. She truly believes she is happiest when she’s in pain because she’s had so many tough times.

Come to Life by Trent Dabbs
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlzR9zUTqQQ
Why I used this song: This is Hunter’s song. He’s realizing he’s in love, and needs Veronica to see it, too. This was the perfect song to listen to while I wrote the scenes where they were fighting their feelings for each other. It literally has the words “ticking clock” in it, too. And there’s a ticking clock they’re racing against when they need to help a ghost cross over into the next world. Cool, huh?

You Make It Real by James Morrison
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRxccy-zcJ8
Why I used this song: This is another song I used for Hunter’s scenes. He sees that she is the woman for him, but he hasn’t convinced her yet. He wants to tell her how he feels, but can’t quite open up to her. But if you listen to this song, you’ll know how he feels.

Make It Without You by Andrew Belle
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TICJw1NEWaM
Why I used this song: Uh oh. Sad song alert!! I listened to this song over and over again to understand how Veronica and Hunter feel when they think they won’t be able to be together. The black moment when they think they’re better off without each other.

Stubborn Lover by Sugar and the Hi Lows
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8T5FM_dz6k
Why I used this song: Yay, a happy song! They’re together! They’re happy! They’re having fun and I dare you to listen to this song and not sing along to the chorus. LOL.

Thanks very much for coming along for a tour of my playlist. Here’s hoping you enjoy reading about Veronica and Hunter in Sidelined Afterlife.
Veronica Matthews hates her psychic-medium "gift" of being able to communicate with ghosts and dying people. All it's ever brought her is pain and grief. When her neighbor Hunter Anderson, an ER doctor, realizes her talent, he begs her to help get rid of the ghost that’s been haunting him for two years and endangering his job. She’s torn—her need to help the attractive man who saves peoples’ lives wars with her guilt over not being about to lead police to crime victims until they were already dead. She agrees to help Hunter. They soon find out the ghost is likely to turn dangerous if he doesn’t cross over to the next world in the coming weeks.

After losing his wife in a tragic accident, Hunter's only solace is his work. The ghost that haunts him jeopardizes the one thing he cares about. But spending time with Veronica, getting to know her passionate lips and sassy attitude, gives him something new to care about.

She can't risk her heart... he’s afraid to love and lose again. Can a ghost help them break through a barrier of mistrust and guilt?

Excerpt:
“I am an idiot. The biggest idiot ever. If you want me to pierce something for you, to prove I’m an idiot, I have some sterilized instruments upstairs in my apartment.”
Her tongue poked against her cheek, signaling a laugh that wanted to erupt. Suddenly, he really wanted to be the one who could make her laugh. “Maybe I could do your lower lip?”
Her short laugh erupted. A sweet, melodic sound that filled the small apartment.
His gaze stayed on that full mouth and he lifted his fingers closer, compelled to touch her.      She stared at him with wide eyes as he traced the corner of her mouth lightly with his finger.
“I’m a liar. I could never tarnish something as beautiful as this.”
Christ. What a line. Where had those words come from? But he meant it.
Her breath was hot against his finger as he traced the line of her lower lip. Her gaze held his. His stomach growled again, breaking the spell, and she blinked and leaned against the sofa.
“You know what? We never had dessert,” she said.
He had room for dessert. But not the food kind. He swallowed to quell his appetite for her. “Uh…how about I make an ice cream run? Then we’ll get to work.” Enough of this temptation. He needed to get away from her, from this pull she had on his body and emotions.
