For Nikki at Close Encounters With the Night Kind

Mistletoe Masquerade: Julie and Luke are an integral part of the supporting cast in my latest novel from the world of 2096, Shadows to Light. She's working undercover and he's one of the enforcers from Mira's healer order. Although in this brief scene, with masks on, she doesn't know him.
In Julie's opinion the annual Mistletoe Masquerade was a glorified kissing booth. She'd been informed her extraction from this assignment was tonight, but so far, none of her kissy visitors had offered up the right code phrase.
Maybe they couldn't find her in the sea of women decked out in colorful gowns and black feathered masks for the party. Such were the perils of working undercover.
"Let's dance."
Again, not the code phrase. She turned and looked up - way up. How had a man with those shoulders managed to sneak up on her? She grinned, her cheeks bumping against the feathers of her mask as she set her hand in his and accompanied him out among the bodies bumping and grinding on the dance floor.
They crowd meant she had to stay closer than she preferred, but it was no hardship in his case. He moved with a masculine grace she appreciated on a purely feminine level. His body, large and strong, surrounded her as he drew her back until her hips nestled against his thighs. She felt his heat and solid muscles under the fine fabric of his suit.
When he spun her around he tugged so she landed against him. The delightful rush went to her head faster than champagne as her breasts met his broad chest. A picture of him shirtless popped into her head and she gasped.
His lips tipped in a wicked half smile as if he'd read her mind and her senses lit up as his hands molded her ass. This never happened. She didn't allow attraction on an undercover assignment. Chemistry and charisma were one thing, this ball of lust quivering in her belly was something entirely new. Something she didn't want to ignore.
He dipped her back, nibbling at her throat. She shivered under the hot, tender assault. No one would notice or even judge. Everyone was daring with a mask on. Even practical, workaholic Julia.
Each second became an eternity as he brought her upright. She met the hunger in his shadowed eyes head on, as she did every challenge. With his hand at her back, she let him guide her away from the crowd, into the shadows.
Facing him, her body humming, she felt the sensual promise of him in every nerve, as he brought her chin up to accept his kiss. She didn't know his name. Didn't want to. Instead, she traced the outline of his jaw, savored the woodsy scent of his cologne. When lips met, she melted on a wave of desire she'd never felt before. Her hands slid under his jacket, exploring him, as his tongue stroked boldly in and out of her mouth, making her ache for the rest of his body to do the same.
Crazy.
Delicious.
She stopped analyzing and decided this moment was her personal Christmas bonus.
He slid one solid thigh between her legs and cupped her breast, thumbing her nipple through her gown. Her thighs clenched around his, quivering for more of him, for more of his touch. She reached for the arousal straining his fly and stroked him until they were both gasping at the edge of a climax.
He brought his lips back to her ear and whispered, "The Christmas goose is cooked."
Her mind, hazed with lust, barely registered the code phrase. He nipped her earlobe and she remembered the response. "We served ham."
He brought her flush against him once more, seared her with another kiss, then scooped her into his arms and carried her out of the party. She tried not to be impressed by the smart move.
Outside, the Chicago night was lit with stars and the bracing air almost cleared away the warm scent of him. If she kept her mask on for the ride back to HQ, she might just survive the embarrassment.

Insider secrets about Shadows to Light:

First I have to say that this book wouldn't be here without Nikki. I struggled with the title for weeks. I couldn't even order the cover art without a title, much less send it out for advance reviews. When I vented to Nikki one night, she tossed back a few ideas and voila! Problem solved and Shadows to Light became a reality. Everyone give Nikki a round of applause!

This 5th book in the Shadows of Justice series stars Mira Luther, a woman who has made cameo appearances in each of the four previous novels. A supernatural healer, Mira thinks of her gift as a light to illuminate health problems and heal people. She is one of my most enigmatic alpha female characters because she's always been in the shadows, trying to help without being noticed.

Hey, when you can cure cancer, but you're not supposed to, that's a tricky balancing act.

Readers started clamoring for Mira's book after seeing her heal Trina in Tracking Shadows (book 4) and it was the best kind of challenge to bring her story to life. Her hero, Brett Jameson is part of an 'off the books' Special Forces team. They were both present during the prison break in Veil of Justice (book 3), but readers didn't see them together until the short story, Mira's Gift. (you can get Mira's Gift as a free read at the Night Owl Reviews website or when you sign up for my 'Join the Adventure' newsletter at ReganBlack.com)

Back cover blurb:
A supernatural healer, Mira escapes a trial of her peers only to be sent on an impossible mission: Rescue her scientist father from a madman using him to create bio-weapons. But she's no spy. On her own, with no real clues, she isn't sure where to turn.

Part of a covert task force searching for a missing government scientist, Jameson is tasked with staring at a laboratory building day in and day out. The boredom is overwhelming until Mira, a woman he cannot forget, shows up in a place she should never be.

Forced together by circumstance, Mira and Jameson enter an adventure that will push them to their limits - and quite possibly beyond.

The five 2096 novels, in reading order are Justice Incarnate, Invasion of Justice, Veil of Justice, Tracking Shadows, and now Shadows to Light.
 Here are the awesome covers!!

Hi, Regan!
How are you? I hope you're having a fun and cheerful holiday season..I was so glad to see that you were posting, because it gives me a chance to plug Justice Incarnate. For those who have not read this series, must start ASAP! I have not read a book that is so original in a very long time.
I have the rest of the series queued up and ready to go on my nook, so you don't need to enter me in the giveaway, however, if you can figure out a way to give me time, y'know like some extra hour or two so I can read, I'd be most appreciative!
All the best for the New Year,
Mara
